| Roundtable Discussion to Focus On Education Issues Before the Texas Legislature
With the current Texas Public School finance system (Robin Hood) decision on appeal, lawmakers are working to solve the education problems plaguing school districts across the state. Two different viewpoints on this landmark decision will set the stage for what is expected to be an informative discussion focusing on the key education topics of today. Speakers include: David Thompson, attorney with Bracewell & Patterson, L.L.P, was the winning attorney in the recent "Robin Hood" decision. Thompson serves as legislative counsel for the Fast Growth Schools Coalition, Houston Independent School District and other school districts and education organizations, and has been actively involved in most legislative activities affecting public education in the past 20 years. Frank Battle, senior counsel for the Lt. Governor's Office. Battle is the senior counsel for public policy to Lt. Governor David Dewhurst. He has served as legislative counsel to the Texas Association of School Boards and as a legislative aide to former Lt. Governor Bill Hobby. His work focuses on state and local tax policy and public school finance. Discussion topics will include the recent "Robin Hood" recapture decision, incentive pay for teachers, increased standards for accreditation, student population growth and education inflation, decreasing the achievement gap in higher education, and vouchers and charter schools.
