Austin, like all of Texas, has no income tax (corporate or personal). In place of an income tax is a smorgasbord of other taxes used to support the public schools, roads and services. The two most notable are property taxes and sales tax.
- Property tax rates fluctuate yearly and vary according to residence location. For information on Travis County, contact the Travis County Tax Office, 473-9473
- Austin city sales tax is 8.25% (levied as follows: 6.25% State sales tax; 1% Capitol Metro - transportation services and roads; and 1% City)
- The list of sales-taxable items varies, but Texas, to its credit, does not levy a tax on unprepared food
